Ok, we tried something new tonight.   Rob Stalker told me about a "double draw" they do in Chicago when they don't have enough people.  We only had 5 people show up tonight, so here's how it went:

We drew twice with 5 people (used a 5 team bracket).  Everyone had two partners.  The odd man from the first draw and the second draw were partners.  Throughout the tourney, if you have to play yourself, your two partners played a singles match.  It's really MUCH easier than it sounds.  We only had two singles matches the whole night.  You really get in A LOT of foosball this way.  You don't get a chance to sit out very often.  Everyone really seemed to like it too.  The singles matches were fun and everyone had a good time.  Since I was sitting in both 1st and 2nd in the finals, Jaydon and Emmett played a singles match for 1st and 2nd (I split 1st and 2nd place prizes).

That looks like a really good solution to the undermanned/odd man tourneys. JDMAN, are you taking notes, could we could adopt that formula, too?

RE: Uptowner Results - Charleston, IL

Hey Rick, I just saw your post today. Well hopefully we won't have to worry about this since we do usually get at least 4-5 teams. We usually just revert to singles, or take the hint and the night off. It has only happened a handful of times among the three scheduled nights in the past 2 years or so. And Sunday was added on after Stratford came along, since historically at Rack-em, and then Sporst center we saw some pretty good turnouts on Sunday we pretty much knew it would catch on. But it looks like a liberal form of the odd-man add-in we have been using. Sounds to me all that switching your team loses its identity about whom are playing against who. Might as well just have pick up? Anyway, we appreciate the heads up.

We play the typical odd man tournies whenever necessary.  As far as teams losing identity....I don't understand exactly what you mean.  I'm not sure even if you did lose track of "team identity" that it could make any significant change to the outcome.  After all, there are only 5 people playing, its pretty easy to keep track of things.

Bottom line for why we played this way instead of pick up games...if we have a tourney the bar throws in $25 and all the quarters we need all night long....no tourney, no $$.

RE: Uptowner Results - Charleston, IL

Oh OK I think I see your point. Glad to see the bar has enough vision to support the tournaments. Sorry to hear you are struggling to get the numbers up. One of these weeks we will load a bunch of players into an SUV and come up and help get the competitive spirit flowing again. There's always a few good players willing to go check out some new scenery. A few of the cliques I have in mind aren't getting along now, but after things blow over I bet we could get a group together for the fun of it, depending on what you have to offer in terms of equipment and amenities. Maybe we'll see you's before Mary's next event??? Hope so. Good luck with it.

    Thanks Jim,
We were trying to plan another $300 added DYP/BYP this fall but I don't think its gonna workout (to many conflicting weekends). Hopefully we'll have another one before the first of March. We were talking about setting up something maybe a few weeks after KY Superbowl.

Ron Olson will be at the Uptowner on Tuesday (10-25-05). Like last time, we'll have a tourney if we get enough people.

RE: Uptowner Results - Charleston, IL

Ron Olsen eh? Good player. Too bad such short notice, I bet I could get some folks to play on one such special occasion. Tell you what, I am planning on starting something like a travelling league or mob or whatever to try and feed the game fuel to help build up the midwest so we can take over the nation and then on to the foos world. Well we can try anyway. I figure we start something like that and then in turn we will draw some players into our house so we can expand again you see. My question was hoping to get an answer, what kind of tables you got there?? because we are pretty spoiled these days with four new non-valley surface (new slick) at Stratford kept up for 3 nights per week of action!! Come check it out for yourself. We are planning on having a monthly DYP on a weekend day where we will have open tables for a set fee. VIFA members will get a discount. Hope we can put something together, I'm getting more ideas as I write this so please respond with anything that might help make our places more exciting. BTW you should see the hot waitresses and bartenders we have. I leave it at that.

RE: Uptowner Results - Charleston, IL

    Jim,
We have a 30th anniversary gray marble and 2 blondes. We've about wore our gray marble out. One of our blondes is pretty decent and the other needs some work. We don't know when it will be possible to get new tables from the vendor. I don't see it happening in the near future. I wish I could say that I'd be down with a car full, but its hard to get everyone together at once. Its hard enough having a tourney of our own these days. I'll be down in the near future, however. I've been meaning to make it for a while. St. Louis players have always came up and supported our tournies and its far past our turn to return the favor.

Not bad, ok well I hope we see you down this way some time in the near future. And like I said we want to try to build up the following so maybe we will come up with a date when Ronzilla comes down and we can come and put on a good show for the local folks to see some new faces, perhaps some bigger turnouts will result and we can try to get a little IL. vs Mo. friendly competition/rivalry going. See ya!
